Twila Richards wrote to the MB-HRC in 2020 with a group of concerned parents. This is a parent and individual initiative.
In December 2020, a group of concerned parents met with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission (MBHRC) to bring their stories and concerns forward. They were supported by Orton-Gillingham practitioners and members of Dyslexia Canada, Dyslexia Champions of Manitoba and Manitoba Teachers for Students with Learning Disabilities.
On October 22, 2021, the MB-HRC announced that they would be launching an inquiry into discrimination against students with learning disabilities. The release of their findings is to circulate in spring/summer 2022. To connect with the organizers and to receive information, you can submit your information here.
The parent organizers ask Manitobans whose children or individuals struggle with literacy (reading, writing, and/or math) to consider filling out this form to have their stories shared.
They have asked MBHRC, in 2020, to inquire into literacy in Manitoba, especially for students who have specific learning disabilities: dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia. Please note, no diagnoses are needed, and other reasons for difficulties with literacy are welcome. Although this is a parent and individual movement, teachers are also welcome.

Phonological awareness and orthographic awareness and basic math awareness should be brought back. The focus should be literacy: reading, writing, spelling, and math.”  Twila

On Friday, October 21st, the Manitoba Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning, the Honourable Wayne Ewasko, will be speaking for Mark it Read.
There are three lightings and a route planned in Winnipeg, Manitoba: The Manitoba Legislative Building, the RBC Convention Centre, and the City of Winnipeg’s sign at that Forks.
Please join us on the north side of the Manitoba Legislative Building before 7:15 at the bottom steps. There will be speeches at 7:15, and the light will turn on at 7:30. We will then celebrate, play games, mingle, and write messages of progress.
At 8:15, we will leave for the RBC Convention Centre to have a group picture under the lights and then go to the Winnipeg sign for another group picture around 9:00 and hear from Karen Sharma, A/ED of MB-HRC along from members of DCM and MTSLD.
