Twila Richards wrote to the MB-HRC in 2020 with a group of concerned parents. This is a parent and individual initiative.
In December 2020, a group of concerned parents met with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission (MBHRC) to bring their stories and concerns forward. They were supported by Orton-Gillingham practitioners and members of Dyslexia Canada, Dyslexia Champions of Manitoba and Manitoba Teachers for Students with Learning Disabilities.
On October 22, 2021, the MB-HRC announced that they would be launching an inquiry into discrimination against students with learning disabilities. The release of their findings is to circulate in spring/summer 2022. To connect with the organizers and to receive information, you can submit your information here.
The parent organizers ask Manitobans whose children or individuals struggle with literacy (reading, writing, and/or math) to consider filling out this form to have their stories shared.
They have asked MBHRC, in 2020, to inquire into literacy in Manitoba, especially for students who have specific learning disabilities: dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia. Please note, no diagnoses are needed, and other reasons for difficulties with literacy are welcome. Although this is a parent and individual movement, teachers are also welcome.

I wrote to the MB-HRC in 2020. For my kids and for all Manitoba dyslexics.
Phonological awareness and orthographic awareness and basic math awareness should be brought back. The focus should be literacy: reading, writing, spelling, and math.” Twila
